Redeveloping Brownfields

Increasing Opportunities For Job Growth and Economic Development

Greater Ohio Policy Center (GOPC) is working to unlock the potential of Ohio’s 9,000+ former industrial and commercial sites that are unusable in their current condition. GOPC has documented the positive economic impact that brownfield cleanups can have on Ohio’s cities and towns. Additionally, GOPC is a leading voice on policy changes that empower communities to return former industrial sites to productive use. GOPC has led calls for regulatory reforms and new state funding to support brownfield clean-up and redevelopment.

 What We Do

Advocacy

GOPC is a nonprofit with a vision of a revitalized Ohio. GOPC is a leading advocate for state investment in brownfield remediation, and has worked with policymakers in Ohio’s General Assembly advocating for brownfield investment since 2013.

Regulatory Reform

In 2020, Ohio’s Legislature passed the Bona Fide Purchase Defense (BFPD) into state law to encourage the redevelopment of lightly contaminated brownfields sites. GOPC was the leading nonprofit advocate for the BFPD law.

Tracking Success

GOPC uses economic impact analyses, interviews with local partners, and ongoing research to educating policymakers on the extraordinary economic benefits of brownfield remediation and redevelopment, including the CORF and BRP Programs.
